A Harvard study found that obesity increases the risks of more than 50 health complications, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension and fatigue. Depending on the complexity of obesity and how long a person suffers from it, these health complications can become serious.
Losing weight quickly has positive health effects on your body, and the more you lose, the more you reduce your risk of many more serious health problems. A lot of people just can’t lose weight. They try multiple diets, recommendations from family or friends, rigorous and intense exercise plans but they just don’t succeed.
And in many other cases, people manage to lose weight but don’t keep it off. In other words, they lose weight at a certain time but due to multiple factors they regain those pounds they have lost. Which leads to a weight gain and loss problem known as the yo-yo effect.
We know how difficult it is to be overweight and how difficult it can be to lose weight and keep it off. For this reason we are at the forefront of weight loss techniques and procedures that help our patients reach their ideal weight.
Our group of health professionals is trained to If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you may be a good candidate for the gastric balloon procedure in Puerto Rico, also called an intragastric balloon.
But what is the Gastric Balloon?
The gastric balloon system is a bariatric weight loss procedure that uses a balloon made of silicone that occupies an area inside the stomach. This way the patient will have less space available in the stomach and will be forced to adapt to much smaller and healthier portion sizes, ultimately resulting in successful weight loss.
It has been shown that with the gastric balloon, patients lose up to 3 times more weight than diet and exercise alone. Also, the procedure is a weight loss program designed to provide effective weight loss results.
And how does the gastric balloon work?
During this procedure, a silicone balloon is placed in the stomach and inflated with saline. The balloon remains inside the stomach for 6 months to reinforce correct portion control and help you lose weight by leaving less space in the stomach and making you feel full faster.
While the patient is sedated, the gastric balloon is placed in the stomach using an endoscope. When properly positioned, it inflates to about the size of a grapefruit with saline solution.
The procedure usually lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, so you will return home and normal activities on the same day in no more than two days. At six months, the gastric balloon is deflated and then removed under sedation for a maximum of 30 minutes.
By occupying a good space in the stomach, the gastric balloon makes the patient feel “full” and also creates a habit for portion control. The patient will get used to eating small and healthy portions.
And the Gastric Balloon if it works?
According to the testimony of many of our patients, significant weight loss results with gastric balloons for most patients occur within six months. Generally, patients lose between 20 and 50 pounds, depending on their starting weight.
After the balloon is removed, patients can continue to lose weight as long as they meet certain requirements such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine.
When having the gastric balloon, what is the diet that I should follow?
Throughout the complete 12-month weight loss program, patients will have regular face-to-face sessions with our specialized team of nutritionists who will guide you with recipes, recommendations and control so that your weight loss journey is successful.
When do I start seeing results?
Most weight loss usually occurs in the first 3 months of treatment. On average, patients lost 3 times more weight than with diet and exercise. Changes in your eating habits and your continued efforts to stay active can greatly influence your results.
Taking into account that the gastric balloon is a tool that helps you improve your habits and keeping strict control over portions and what you eat.
And what are the benefits of the gastric balloon?
- It is not surgery, there are no cuts or scars. As described above, the gastric balloon procedure is minimally invasive and takes no more than 30 minutes. There, the patient is sedated and a thin tube carries the silicone balloon into the patient through the throat and into the stomach. The surgeon then guides a scope down your throat to watch the balloon as it inflates with saline. When the balloon is inflated and sealed, the tubes are removed and the procedure is complete. patients do not have to go through long recovery times and go home the same day. The balloon is left inside for six months and then the balloon is removed with an endoscope;
- It is a temporary treatment and can be withdrawn at any time. By design, the gastric balloon must remain in the patient’s stomach for six months before removal. But given the special circumstances before that, it can be removed at any time through an endoscopy procedure;
- The gastric balloon produces real results when losing weight. The most favorable results are seen in patients who adhere to diet, exercise, and portion control requirements. Generally, patients lose between 20 and 50 pounds, depending on their starting weight.
