But what is the Gastric Balloon?
The gastric balloon system is a bariatric weight loss procedure that uses a balloon made of silicone that occupies an area inside the stomach. This way the patient will have less space available in the stomach and will be forced to adapt to much smaller and healthier portion sizes, ultimately resulting in successful weight loss.
It has been shown that with the gastric balloon, patients lose up to 3 times more weight than diet and exercise alone. Also, the procedure is a weight loss program designed to provide effective weight loss results.
And how does the gastric balloon work?
During this procedure, a silicone balloon is placed in the stomach and inflated with saline. The balloon remains inside the stomach for 6 months to reinforce correct portion control and help you lose weight by leaving less space in the stomach and making you feel full faster.
While the patient is sedated, the gastric balloon is placed in the stomach using an endoscope. When properly positioned, it inflates to about the size of a grapefruit with saline solution.
The procedure usually lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, so you will return home and normal activities on the same day in no more than two days. At six months, the gastric balloon is deflated and then removed under sedation for a maximum of 30 minutes.
